random outfits + the 'rule of 5'

I've always sort lived by this rule of thumb when getting dressed, to always have 5 pieces on. I'm not sure when or why I adopted this rule; probably my Momma. She's pretty fab!
I feel like I am more 'put together' and that the outfit is more visually appealing. Now obviously there can be exceptions to this rule i.e. an evening gown. Keep in mind these 5 items can be anything from your shoes, necklace, a watch, belt, purse, earrings, pants, cardigan, scarf etc. But these are just my guidelines, maybe you could try it out and see if it snazzes up your outfits more, or heck maybe you already wear 5+ pieces.

a night out with the ladies| this seems to be my "go to" night out outfit

1. A flowy, cute top. I found mine at of course, Target. It's hard to see in the picture but it has gold polka dots all over it.
2. My new Kendra Scott Zahara  necklace. I think a statement piece is always important to wear when going out...especially if you're single and on the "hunt". It gives guys a good 'ice breaker' conversation starter. However, I am not on the hunt and sometimes I wear several 'statement' pieces, mostly because I love to accessorize.
3. I love animal prints so I don't think you can go wrong with a snakeskin or cheetah print clutch. It adds a little pizazz to your outfit.
4. Nude heels from Charlotte Russe for a whopping $30!
5. Black skinny jeans, a staple wardrobe item; slimming, sexy and super versatile. Let me tell you a little secret for all your shorties out there: these skinnies are from Target's Girls section for $12!!
6. Hand me down snake cuff
7. Turquoise gladiator cuff from Charming Charlies

i <3 football | a cute tailgating outfit

This is kind of what my outfit looked like from this weekend.
1. Black tights
2. Burnt Orange Longhorns t-shirt
3. Furry white vest (because we finally got cold weather!)
4. Boot socks pulled a couple inches above my boots and slouched
5. Nice pair of flat boots, comfy for walking all over campus
6. My new black cross body hand bag (not a Marc Jacobs, but it looks very similar to it)
7. I forgot to include it in the picture but I scored this adorable Leather Wrap Watch that I am in LOVE with. It looks similar to this one except it is brown leather and has gold studs one one wrap and rhinestones on the other.
7. Last but not least, we decided to take Gunnar with us to tailgate- he was my statement piece! haha

happy Tuesday lovelies,

trend alert: hair chalking/sea dipped/pastel tips

I am totally digging this new trend! Especially since it can be a temporary fun change to your hair. Normally I'm not a fan of wrecking a pretty face with crazy colors like magenta, purple or blue. But I love the subtlety of this look.

High pigment

More wearable just a touch of color

I want to try blue or maybe red

I almost wish the highlighted parts of my hair were blonde enough to pull off this rainbow effect. Love this chicks style too!

Here's one way to achieve the pastel tips on your own. Obviously you have to have some sections of highlighting if you have darker hair or you need to have light hair to make this work. But in this blog she explains pretty well how to use the Kevin Murphy Color Bug .

Would you try this out? If so what color would you do?

take your maxi from summer to fall!

First off, please excuse my lengthy absence. I have been mega sick (stupid Austin allergens and boo on whoever gave me this pesky little virus) and then Halloween snuck up on us and we had some drama go down at one of our rental properties that has majorly consumed my motivation to be near a 'smart' device i.e. phone, computer, ipad.

Anywho, since the holidays are upon us and I've been trying REAL hard to be diligent with my 12 step shopaholic program (not really a thing, but sometimes I think it should be) I decided to go through my closet and figure out how I can recycle a lot of my pieces or just wear them in different ways to make them feel fun and new. I reallyreallyreally love wearing maxi dresses; they make me feel tall and elegant. Two things that don't happen often unless I'm in 4" heels or...a maxi. Unfortunately the hubs is not a huge fan of them so I don't wear them very much, usually just with the gals. But I thought maybe I could I figure out how to wear them more often when he's not around and what a more perfect place, then work!

*These pics were taken after my second day back to work from being sick and after my awesome date with NyQuil. So I did wake up thinking 'hot damn i feel amazing' ...and again, I look like a grease monkey in my pics. Note to self: apply a little powder before next photo sesh mmkay. ;-)

So here's the recipe for this SUPER comfy and cute little ensemble:
Maxi Dress
Contrasting color button up, I found mine recently at Le Target for $20! Leave the top 2 or 3 buttons undone then button the rest to the center of your chest. Tuck the shirt up underneath and tie the ends in a knot and tuck the tails up underneath.
Add a cute waist belt.
Throw on some fun accessories and shoes (I would have worn wedges to dress it up a bit more for work but I "hemmed" this dress to wear with flat sandals) and voila!

You could also do: maxi dress, blazer and put the belt over the blazer with some cute wedges or heels to pull this look off for work. To keep from looking frumpy or little house on the prairie, make sure your maxi isn't ball gown style with tons of extra material.

What do ya think? Would y'all wear this work?

wear to work Thursday

I was going to try and do the inspirational work outfit every Wednesday but life is just busy like a bumble bee. So here is the basic gist of the outfit I wore yesterday. I don't have a picture of myself in the actual outfit. I know, sad.  ;) The pieces on the right are what I wore and then the 3 pictures on the left I wanted to share this cute new way to wear your scarves.

1. Camel and White striped ultra soft Mossimo sweater from Target. I ended up buying it in a size large so that later on I can wear it with black leggings and boots!
2. My fave earrings, Kendra Scott Wren in turquoise. Turquoise and coral compliment eachother nicely.
3. Tortoise shell watch with Pave crystals that I found somewhere for like $15!
4. Simple white work slacks that I'm sure I picked up at Papaya or Agaci Too
5. Peep toe cheetah print heels. The pair I own I've had for ages and they have little bows on them. Le cute!
6. A beautiful coral scarf that my Momma gifted to me
7. A gorgeous turqouise brooch that I received as a bridesmaids gift, to pull the colors together

Keep in mind all the outfits I post are meant as inspirations for you. It's so easy to put your own flare or style into them.

The picture of the yellow scarf is where I got the inspiration from on how to wear my coral one.
Here's how:
Fold the scarf in half. Loop around your neck. Pull only one strand of the scarf through the loop. Twist the loop and pull the other strand through the loop. Add your pretty brooch and voila!
